FAQ

Answers to common questions about EveryUnit accuracy, output number formatting, coordinate conversions, and batch file processing.

How accurate are the conversions on EveryUnit?

EveryUnit uses official international standards from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures). Exact definitions (such as 1 inch = 0.0254 meters and 1 light year = 9,460,730,472,580,800 meters) are calculated in IEEE-754 double precision.

Can I customize the output number format (commas, dots, spaces, scientific notation)?

Yes. On every converter page, the Output Number Format panel lets you choose Auto, Fixed decimals, Significant digits, Scientific (1.2×10⁻³ or 10^-3), Engineering, or E-notation, as well as your preferred decimal mark, thousands separator, and leading zeros.

How do I convert Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS) to Decimal Degrees (DD)?

Open the Coordinates (DMS ↔ DD) converter or type a coordinate directly into the search bar. You can enter coordinates with symbols (50°05'12.6"N), spaces (50 05 12.6), or compact without spaces (500512.6).

Are uploaded CSV, TXT, or Excel files sent to a server?

No. The Batch File Converter processes your CSV, TXT, TSV, XLSX, and JSON files 100% locally inside your browser. Your files never leave your computer.

What if a unit I need is missing?

Visit the Unit Wishlist page and submit the unit name, symbol, and definition or reference link. We regularly review and add requested historical, regional, and industry units.
